From Civil War to Civil Rights
A study of a Century of Southern Politics
October 17 – 24, 2010
We begin in Montgomery, the first Capital of The Confederacy where we will watch as the seven deep South states in rebellion meet to form a government in early 1861. In Montgomery and Selma, AL where 100 years later the struggle for equal rights raged in the mid 20th century we’ll visit sites that mark the vision of our 16th president whose quest for freedom from slavery would extend beyond even his expectations. Our major highlight will be meeting people who marched with Martin Luther King in 1965 and having access to the Alabama Archives with the curator and director.
We will relive again one of the most dramatic sea battles in naval history at Mobile and visit the USS Alabama, Jefferson Davis’s last home in Biloxi, and end in New Orleans, the Queen City of the Gulf where the cultures of North and South first clashed head-to-head to secure the critical port and entrance to the mighty Mississippi River. Here we will visit the home where General John Bell Hood later lived, Lafayette Cemetery, take a walking tour of the French Quarter, and have a special visit to the National World War II Museum, commemorating another great passage in our history.
