Tour Itinerary:
Day 1 – Airport transfers are included. Welcome dinner. Overnight: Lewiston, ID (D)
Day 2 – The start of the trail is Wallawa Lake State Park, the traditional homeland of Old Chief Joseph’s band of Nez Perce on the Oregon side of the Snake River. Enjoy jetboat ride this evening on the Snake River and dinner at Heller Bar. Overnight: Lewiston, ID (L,D)
Day 3 – Nez Perce National Park includes 24 of the 38 sites of historic significance to the Nez Perce. Today’s highlight is the White Bird Battlefield, the so-called war’s first confrontation. Park rangers and tribal members lend interpretation throughout our two-day visit. Overnight: Kamiah.
Day 4 – The Nez Perce traditionally wintered in Kamiah, where hunting and fishing were abundant and their origin story Heart of the Monster, remains. Tonight enjoy a traditional Nez Perce dinner, and cultural interpretative program consisting of tribal music, dances, costumes and storytelling. Overnight: Kamiah. (B,D)
Day 5 – Visit historically significant Wieppe Prairie and follow the trail into Montana over Lolo Pass, the traditional Nez Perce route through the mountains to their buffalo hunting grounds. Overnight: Hamilton, MT. (B)
Day 6 – Big Hole Battlefield is the only nationally-recognized battlefield of the Nez Perce campaign of 1877. Learn how the Nez Perce were allowed to elude their pursuers time after time although greatly outnumbered. Overnight: West Yellowstone. (L)
Day 7 – The flight through Yellowstone, a familiar hunting ground, produced white tourists to complicate their journey with tragic results. View Old Faithful, Fountain Paint Pots and the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone and travel what has been proclaimed the most scenic highway in America: the Beartooth Highway. Overnight: Red Lodge, MT. (D)
Day 8 – Visit the Canyon Creek Battlesite. Learn “the other side of the story” from a Crow Tribe tribal member who brings insight to the Crow refusal to help their allies. Overnight: Billings. (B,D)
