TOUR ITINERARY:

DAY #1 – ARRIVALS

Airport transfers from Denver directly to Scottsbluff.  Enjoy a Western Welcome Dinner in the shadow of one of the trail’s most distinguishable landmarks, Scott’s Bluff.  Overnight:  Scottsbluff, NE.  (L, D)

 

DAY #2 – SCOTT'S BLUFF NATIONAL MONUMENT / FORT ROBINSON

Tour Scotts Bluff National Monument, on the Oregon Trail, and Fort Robinson, a post-Civil War Indian Agency where Crazy Horse breathed his last.   Our home for the next four nights is the State Game Lodge, summer White House to two U.S. presidents, in beautiful Custer State Park.  (B)

DAY #3 – HISTORIC DEADWOOD / TATANKA

Our destination today is historic Deadwood,  the setting for the last great gold rush in America. We’ll tour Boot Hill and visit Tatanka: Story of the Bison,  a larger-than-life bronze sculpture and center which interpret the story of bison at the height of the Buffalo Culture around the year 1840.  Overnight:  Custer State Park.  (B,D)

DAY #4 – MOUNT RUSHMORE / CRAZY HORSE / JEEP RIDE

Today we’ll viist Mount Rushmore and  Crazy Horse Monument, before returning to Custer State Park for an exciting  jeep ride over the park’s wildlife loop to view buffalo and other wildlife.  Dinner tonight is at our lodge – where we’ll dine appropriately on buffalo steak!  Overnight: Custer State Park.  (B, D)

DAY #5 – JOURNEY MUSEUM / BADLANDS NATIONAL PARK

This morning we’ll  the Journey Museum for a useful background on the area and its previous inhabitants.  Described by early explorers as “hell with the fires burned out”, Badlands National Park offers unique geologic beauty, Native American heritage and, of course, world-famous Wall Drug.   Optional evening activities include ranger talks and interpretive programs in the adjacent “barn”. Overnight: Custer State Park.  (B, L)

DAY #6 – FORT LARAMIE / OREGON TRAIL RUTS

As we depart the Black Hills we’ll tour Fort Laramie, the best-known milepost on the Oregon Trail, and nearby Oregon Trail Ruts.   The end of the trail is Denver.  Farewell Dinner.  Overnight: Denver.  (B, D)
