Treasures of Western Nebraska

TOUR ITINERARY:

DAY # 1 - ARRIVALS

Welcome to the West! Upon arrival at Denver International Airport we will immediately commence our journey to the past!  Tonight’s welcome dinner is literally in the shadow of one of the trail’s most distinguished landmarks, Scott’s Bluff.   Overnight:   Scottsbluff, NE. (D)

DAY # 2 - FORT ROBINSON / MUSEUM OF THE FUR TRADE

This morning we’ll travel to Fort Robinson, a post-Civil War Indian Agency where Crazy Horse breathed his last. We’ll tour the post’s museum and have a guided tour of the historic points of interest, before embarking on an adventurous jeep ride to the fort’s herd of buffalo. After lunch on our own (buffalo burgers are on the menu!) we’ll visit the Museum of the Fur Trade. In addition to the excellent exhibits and authentic Native American handcrafted items for sale, there is an original fur traders cabin right on the premises. Overnight again in Scottsbluff. (B, D)

DAY # 3 - SCOTTS BLUFF NATIONAL MONUMENT / AGATE FOSSEL BEDS

Scotts Bluff was one of the best-known landmarks on the Oregon Trail. We’ll learn about the triumphs and challenges that met the pioneers in this part of the West, and get a bird’s eye view of the surrounding prairie from atop the bluff. Next on the agenda is a visit to Agate Fossil Beds, an internationally recognized fossil site. The landscape surrounding the fossil beds has been a site of change for millions of years. Here on the plains you can see the relationship between land, weather, ecology and mammals. We’ll cap the day with a relaxed wine-tasting at the new Prairie Vine Vineyards. (B)

DAY # 4 - FORT LARAMIE / OREGON TRAIL

The trail leads to Fort Laramie today as we tour the best-known milepost on the Oregon Trail.  Wagon wheel ruts are still visible in nearby Guernsey, mute testimony to the thousands of emigrants who carried their hopes and ambitions westward over a hundred years ago. The living history exhibits and interpretive tour of the fort provide a deeper understanding of both the westward expansion movement and the Native Americans who staked their lives on preventing it. We’ll end our day in Cheyenne, Wyoming at a modern-day buffalo ranch, to learn more about this pioneer mainstay.  (B,D)

DAY # 5 - BEHIND THE CHUTES / END OF THE TRAIL

The adventure continues this morning as we tour the Cheyenne Frontier Days Old West Museum where we’ll see western art, carriages, rodeo history and a great Frontier Days video, plus get a first-hand look at what goes on during the rodeo from behind the scenes with a special tour “behind the chutes”. We’ll have free time to browse some exclusive galleries and outfitters and learn more about the town’s cowboy heritage on a narrated trolley tour. The end of the trail is Denver, where we’ll wind up our memorable Old West adventure with a festive farewell dinner. (B, D)
